Teen runner dies after muscle cream overdose
From MSNBC http://rss.msnbc.msn.com/id/19144600
NEW YORK - A medical examiner blamed a 17-year-old track star’s death on the use of too much anti-inflammatory muscle cream, the kind used to soothe aching legs after exercise.
Arielle Newman, a cross-country runner at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, died after her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory found in sports creams such as Bengay and Icy Hot, the New York City medical examiner said Friday.
The medical examiner’s spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, said the teen used “topical medication to excess.” She said it was the first time that her office had reported a death from using a sports cream.
In addition to spreading the muscle cream on her legs between track meets, Newman was using adhesive pads containing the anti-inflammatory, plus an unspecified third product containing the chemical, Borakove said. The products were used and the chemical absorbed over time, rather than from a single instance of overuse, she said.
Newman, who garnered numerous track awards, died April 3. She had gone to a party the night before, then returned home and spent hours talking with her mother.
Methyl salicylate poisoning is unusual, and deaths from high levels of the chemical are rare.
"Chronic use is more dangerous than one-time use,” Edward Arsura, chairman of medicine at Richmond University Medical Center, told the Staten Island Advance on Friday. “Exercise and heat can accentuate absorption.”
Dr. Ronald Grelsamer, of Mount Sinai Medical Center, said Newman had a very abnormal amount of methyl salicylate in her body.
“She either lathered herself with it, or used way too much, or she used a normal amount and an abnormal percentage was absorbed into her body,” he said.
Her mother, Alice Newman, said she still couldn’t believe her daughter’s death was caused by a sports cream.
“I am scrupulous about my children’s health,” she told the Advance. “I did not think an over-the-counter product could be unsafe.”

Discovery Team Member Hit By Car
From cyclingnews.com:
Last Sunday, January 14, Discovery Channel rider Uros Murn was seriously injured while training on the roads near his home in Slovenia, and will be unable to ride for at least three months. The accident occurred when Murn and a training group were struck by a car from behind on a local road between Novo Mesto and Sentjernej.
The car was overtaking another vehicle when it hit the group of cyclists, with Murn and Primoz Segina of Croatian cycling team BK Puris Kamen Pazin rushed to a hospital in the capital of Ljubljana. Murn, the first of the group to be hit by the car, sustained three breaks in the same leg including an open fracture of the femur. He immediately underwent surgery and at last notice, the surgery was successful.
According to Discovery team manager Johan Bruyneel, Murn, seventh at the 2006 world road championships in Salzburg, was scheduled to be a key rider in the team's spring classics campaign. "This is obviously a terrible accident and right now, I am only concerned about his current status and well being," said Bruyneel in a team statement. "We have a large team with many riders who can race in his absence. The difficult thing is finding a rider that has the talent and experience in the classics. The whole team wishes Uros a speedy recovery."

Trainer Challenge
I took it upon myself to do a trainer workout this morning from Papa Louie's Blog. He invited anyone who was game to try it out. It is an interval workout that lasts for one hour. I used my road bike, which has a compact crankset, so my gearing is a little different than what the workout calls for. I did the best I could, considering my tri bike is in pieces right now (more on that story in a later post). Here is the workout as I did it with my gearing:
And here is my HR/Cadence/Speed info:
And lastly, the workout data:
I am not sure I believe that I burned 1256 calories, but it was tough nonetheless. This was a fun workout that had me sweating buckets (all over my wife's freshly cleaned floor), and I enjoyed it. Thanks for the challenge, Louie! I plan on incorporating several of the workouts from www.fasttandem.com in my future trainer sessions.
